Winter and Vitamin D Deficiency

Its that time of year again…where sunlight exposure is at its most scarce. Along with many indoor days and nights, we see decreases in our body’s stores of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced when ultraviolet rays from the sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.  Two reactions must happen before vitamin D becomes biologically active; one in the liver and one in the kidneys.  Given that increased sun exposure increases risk of skin cancers and accelerated aging, I do not recommend that patients receive vitamin D from the sun alone.  Therefore, how is vitamin D important to our health, where do we find dietary sources of vitamin D and what about dietary supplements?

There seems to be a handful of cardio exercises that have been effective for years. Here I've compiled some crucial cardio workouts that have been around forever and can be used to mix things up.

1. Step ups have been used in aerobics for years. All you need is an elevated surface that you can step up and step down off of and you're good to go. It's a great cardio workout that also tones and sculpts the legs.

It accounts for a third of your life and a big chunk of your health and longevity. So why aren't you sleeping enough?

What a night. The woman of your dreams appeared. Your pulse raced. Heavy breathing ensued. You do remember it, right? Oh, wait, you were asleep. And that's not all you missed. Under cover of night, sleep floods your veins with age-defying human growth hormone. Sleep raises an army of T cells and sends them into battle against colds and infection. Sleep resets the appetite controls that tell you to not hit the turn signal when you pass a McDonald's. And, of course, sleep helps you above the neck as well as below the belt.
