Get Fit Challenge II 2014 Contestant
"The Get Fit Challenge was the perfect vehicle to jump-start my rediscovery. It pushed me to change the foundation of my comfort zone, improved my confidence, and returned to me a healthy life balance."
August 9th, 2011: "21 and done." That was the day a devastating knee injury ended my collegiate volleyball career. Over the next 3 ½ years, I struggled to find my life balance. The challenges I faced manifested themselves in weight gain and a loss of confidence. However, at the start of this year I made a conscious decision to make significant changes in my life that can be summed up in three words - Risk, Routine, and Reward.
The Get Fit Challenge was the perfect vehicle to jump-start my rediscovery. There are always risks when making changes. My comfort zone was built on poor eating habits and lack of motivation to perform regular exercise. After stepping on the gym scale and measuring my body fat percentage, reality hit hard. I knew that it was time to focus on my well-being, so I made a commitment to do the GFC and develop a healthier lifestyle.
My new routine would consist of specialized workouts with my trainer, Dan Pearson, clean eating, and daily supplements. Having gone through a similar sports injury, Dan became a fitness benchmark as I set high expectations for myself. Dan's mantra of "just keep moving" is a constant motivator. With his knowledge, he was able to modify my training to get the maximum benefit out of every workout. One important tool Dan incorporated was heart rate training. I invested in a polar monitor, which allowed me to make sure I stayed in a fat-burning zone during workouts. His belief in me coupled with my respect for him has made all the difference during the Challenge.
While doing the Get Fit Challenge, finding the right nutritional plan was where I needed the most guidance. Dan helped me put together a program that added a protein powder, CLA supplement, and a multivitamin, all of which supported my overall fitness goals. It was fascinating to watch how my body would respond to different foods. The protein powder was the biggest blessing in disguise. I had no idea how important adding a protein shake after my workout was to muscle recovery, and I began to see significant results.
The GFC provided me with priceless rewards. It pushed me to change the foundation of my comfort zone, improved my confidence, and returned to me a healthy life balance. Through this challenge I have learned to trust my knee and banish excuses for it. I know that without the accountability and encouragement I received from the XSport staff at Piper's Alley, I would not have been able to produce these results. Looking back on all of my accomplishments over the course of the GFC, I can truly say that April 30th, 2015 - "I feel alive at 25" !
